Mature workers who fear the growth of AI

20/01/26

People and Process

Many mature workers (over 50 years old) are apprehensive about the increasing use of AI solutions, particularly in the workplace. This apprehension is not without good reasons like:

Training – no knowledge or technical skills to use AI
Support – employers do not allow enough time for training alongside daily work
Gossip – rumours that “AI is going to take your job!”
Communication – lack of timely information from senior management
Culture – no trust by the employees in management given previous poor
change management
Disjointed messaging – jobs are displaced after notice that no jobs will be lost

Mature workers bring value to the organisation.

Never underestimate the value of a seasoned employee who has grown up with the organisation and has given their all to the advancement of the organisation’s mission. They bring many attributes to the organisation that younger workers lack or are on the road to developing. Consider a few of these great skills:

Work experience – years of practical problem-solving skills, making them less likely to panic during crisis.
Stability – most likely debt free and not focused purely on remuneration, lowing turnover especially during times of stress.
Ethical and core values – advocates of integrity, dedication and trustworthiness.
Leadership – more experience in managing change and diverse groups.
Mentoring – ability to train and coach younger workers.
Demographic – a different voice to younger workers that enriches conversations.
Network – extensive connections across different industries that can be tapped.
Loyalty – affinity to a brand and willing to promote the business continuously.
Communication – refined presentation skills and articulates with confidence.
History and perspective – know past errors and how to avoid the same mistakes.
